What gets dug in the Bitterroot

Land here comes in parcels, not lots. Five acres outside Lolo, twenty up the Bitterroot, a place off a county road that needs its own driveway, its own drainage and its own septic. That work used to mean calling an excavating contractor and waiting for a window in his season.

A one to two ton machine changes the math. Six feet of dig depth handles a drain field and a water line. Expandable tracks get through a gate and between trees without taking the fence out. A thumb turns it into a machine for rock, roots and the stump you have been driving around for two years.

And it does not stop when the ground freezes. The same machine that dug in September clears the driveway in January, moves firewood, and sets posts along a fence line in spring with an auger.

The catch with buying in Montana is service distance, so the spec matters more than the sticker: the engine is a Kubota, the same diesel shops here already work on, and the hydraulics use standard fittings.
