What gets dug around Moscow and Latah County

Most of the digging on this side of the state line happens on properties, not job sites. Five acres off Highway 8, a place up toward Troy or Deary with timber on it, an older house in town with a water line that finally gave up. The list repeats itself: septic and drain field, a driveway that needs a culvert, footings for a shop, a stump left from clearing, a trench for power out to an outbuilding.

None of that needs a five ton machine, and none of it is worth a contractor’s minimum charge. It needs about six feet of digging depth, a machine narrow enough to fit between a house and a fence, and a thumb for rock and roots.

Owning instead of renting changes the arithmetic on this kind of work. The machine is there on a Saturday, in the middle of the project, in the one week the ground is finally dry — not booked out until the following month.

And when the snow comes, the same machine that dug the drain field in September clears the driveway.

We are about an hour and a half north on US-95, in Spokane Valley. Pickups are on Fridays; everything else goes on a carrier.

Warranty

Every machine carries the manufacturer’s parts warranty — 1 to 2 years depending on the model. The Kubota engine is covered separately under Kubota’s own engine warranty.
